How Does the New Champions League Format Work?

The Champions League's 36-team league phase explained: eight games per club, top-8 direct qualification, the 9-24 playoff, knockouts, and kickoff times.

By MatchCountdown Editorial · Updated October 2026

The Short Answer

The short answer: since the 2024-25 season, the UEFA Champions League has replaced its eight groups of four with a single league phase of 36 clubs. Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents — four at home, four away — and every result feeds one combined 36-team table. The top eight advance directly to the round of 16, teams ranked 9th through 24th enter a two-legged playoff for the remaining eight spots, and the bottom twelve are eliminated from European competition entirely.

The rhythm of the week has not changed: matches are still played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with kickoffs at 18:45 and 21:00 Central European Time. In 2026-27 the league phase runs from 8 September 2026 to 27 January 2027, the knockout play-offs are on 16–17 and 23–24 February, and the final is on Saturday 5 June 2027 at the Metropolitano in Madrid.

How the 36-Team League Phase Works

The old group stage guaranteed each club six games: home and away against the same three opponents. The league phase replaces that with eight games against eight different clubs, so a team never faces the same opponent twice before the knockouts. Fixtures are assigned by a draw that sorts the 36 entrants into four pots of nine based on UEFA's club coefficient rankings. Every team draws two opponents from each pot — one to host, one to visit — which means even the top seeds meet a couple of fellow heavyweights before the knockout rounds arrive.

All 36 clubs sit in one table, ranked by points, with goal difference as the first tiebreaker. The math of the expansion matters for anyone planning a season of viewing: the league phase produces 144 matches, up from 96 in the old group stage, spread across eight matchdays between September and January. On the final matchday, every fixture kicks off simultaneously, so no club can play its last game already knowing the results elsewhere.

Who Advances: The Top 8, the 9-24 Playoff, and Who Goes Home

Finishing in the top eight is the prize position. Those clubs skip a round entirely, moving straight into the round of 16 in March, and they carry a seeding advantage into the knockout bracket.

Clubs ranked 9th through 24th drop into the knockout phase playoff, a two-legged round played in February. Teams ranked 9-16 are seeded, which guarantees them the second leg at home, and each faces an unseeded club from the 17-24 band. The eight winners claim the remaining round-of-16 places; the eight losers are done for the season.

That last point is one of the format's sharpest changes. Under the old system, third-place group finishers dropped into the Europa League and kept playing continental football. Now there is no parachute: finish 25th or lower, or lose the February playoff, and the European campaign simply ends.

The Knockout Rounds: From February to the Final

From the round of 16 onward, the competition looks familiar. The round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals are all two-legged ties, with the aggregate score across both matches deciding who advances. The away-goals rule is gone — if a tie is level after both legs, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time and then, if needed, a penalty shootout.

What is genuinely new is the fixed bracket. Instead of fresh draws before every round, the knockout path is mapped out tennis-style from the round of 16 through to the final, with positions shaped by league-phase ranking. A strong league-phase finish therefore pays off twice: it earns a bye past the February playoff and a theoretically kinder route deeper into the tournament.

The final is a single match at a neutral stadium chosen years in advance, played on a Saturday in late spring. In 2026-27 the round of 16 is on 9–10 and 16–17 March, the quarter-finals on 6–7 and 13–14 April and the semi-finals on 27–28 April and 4–5 May, before the final at the Metropolitano in Madrid on 5 June 2027. Its kickoff time is set separately from regular matchdays and has varied, so check that one date rather than assuming the usual evening slot.

When Matches Kick Off — and How Long to Budget

Matchdays follow a long-standing two-slot pattern, and the 2026-27 fixtures follow it exactly. On every two-night matchday so far, each night has had two matches in the early 18:45 window (Central European Time) and seven at 21:00, so 18 games across Tuesday and Wednesday. Matchday 1 (8–10 September) was spread over Tuesday to Thursday, with six games a night. Our guide to Champions League kick-off times converts both slots to every major time zone.

For viewers outside Central Europe, the standard conversions hold for most of the season: 21:00 CET is 8:00 p.m. in the UK and Ireland, 3:00 p.m. US Eastern, and noon Pacific, while the 18:45 slot lands at 5:45 p.m. UK time and 12:45 p.m. Eastern. Daylight-saving switchovers briefly shift those gaps in late October and late March, so a countdown page like matchcountdown.com that converts kickoff to your local time is the easy way to avoid the one-hour trap.

As for time budgets: a league-phase match is 90 minutes plus halftime and stoppage time, so blocking out two hours and 15 minutes covers nearly every game. For knockout second legs and the final, allow closer to two hours and 45 minutes — extra time and a shootout can add 40 minutes or more when a tie refuses to settle itself. If you only protect two evenings all season, make them the simultaneous final league-phase matchday in January and the Saturday of the final.
