How Long Do Volleyball Matches Last?

Best of five sets, 25 points, a deciding set to 15: how volleyball scoring works and how long indoor and beach matches really take.

By MatchCountdown Editorial · Updated October 2026

The short answer: 1½ to 2½ hours indoors

Volleyball has no clock. A match lasts as long as it takes one team to win three sets, so its length depends on how many sets are needed and how close they are. As a rough guide for professional indoor volleyball, a 3–0 win takes about 75–90 minutes, a four-set match about 1 hour 45 minutes, and a five-set match 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes.

A beach volleyball match is shorter, usually 40 minutes to an hour.

How indoor scoring works

Indoor volleyball is played over the best of five sets. The first four sets go to 25 points, and a team has to win by two, so a set can run to 26–24, 30–28 or beyond. There is no cap. If the match reaches two sets all, a deciding fifth set is played to 15 points, again won by two.

Every rally scores a point, whichever team served. That system, called rally scoring, replaced the old side-out scoring at the end of the 1990s to make matches shorter and more predictable for television. A typical set now takes 20–30 minutes.

The same format is used across the professional game: the FIVB Nations League and World Championships, the CEV Champions League, Italy's Serie A1, Türkiye's Sultanlar Ligi and Efeler Ligi, and most of the big national leagues. US college volleyball (NCAA) uses it too.

What adds time

Under FIVB rules each team gets two 30-second time-outs per set, and some competitions add TV breaks. The break between sets is usually three minutes. A coach can ask for a video challenge on a line call, a touch or a net fault, and each review takes a minute or two.

In two-legged European cup ties, if each team wins one leg, a single extra set to 15 points, the golden set, decides who goes through, adding another 15–20 minutes.

Beach volleyball

Beach volleyball is the best of three sets. The first two go to 21 points and a deciding third set to 15, all won by two. Pairs switch ends every seven points (every five in the third set), and each team has one time-out per set. A two-set match often takes 40 minutes, and a three-setter can approach an hour and a quarter.

Planning your evening

If a Sultanlar Ligi match starts at 19:00, expect it to end between 20:15 and 21:30 depending on how many sets it needs. A five-set thriller can run past 21:15 in any league. MatchCountdown shows every volleyball match's start time in your own time zone, with a live countdown and reminders.
