In Tokyo, every Champions League match started in the middle of the night
All 88 Champions League matches played this season up to 31 October, qualifying rounds included, kicked off between midnight and 6 a.m. in Tokyo. For a fan in Sydney, three in four Premier League matches did.

The Premier League and the Bundesliga are kindest to Asia
In Tokyo, 33% of Premier League matches started in the middle of the night, against 89% for Ligue 1, 78% for La Liga and 76% for Serie A. In Jakarta and Mumbai the Premier League figure was 14%, against 57% to 61% for Ligue 1. The Bundesliga is close behind, at 13% to 14% in both cities.
The reason is the slot. The Premier League and the Bundesliga play many of their matches in the early afternoon in Europe, which lands in the Asian evening. Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A put more of theirs in the European evening, which is the middle of the night from India eastwards. The Champions League plays almost entirely in the European evening, which is why it is the hardest competition to watch live in Asia.
Sydney has it worst in football
For league football, no city in our list has it worse than Sydney: 74% of Premier League matches, 78% of La Liga (level with Tokyo), 79% of Serie A and 91% of Ligue 1 started between midnight and 6 a.m. there. The Champions League figure, 68%, is lower than Tokyo's only because the latest European kick-offs reach Sydney after 6 a.m. once Australian daylight saving starts in October.
The NBA flips the map, and the NFL reaches everyone
The NBA is played in the North American evening, which is the middle of the night across Europe and Africa: 96% of its games tipped off between midnight and 6 a.m. in Johannesburg, 93% in Lagos, 82% in Dubai and 80% in London. In East Asia and Australia the same games fall in the morning or early afternoon, so the share drops to 5% in Jakarta, 2% in Tokyo and none in Sydney.
The NFL spreads its games across Sunday afternoon, Sunday night, Monday night and Thursday night in the United States, so no city outside the Americas avoids it: between 37% of games in London and Lagos and 60% in Jakarta started in the middle of the night.
Not even Los Angeles is safe
European football's lunchtime kick-offs reach the US West Coast before dawn. In Los Angeles, 10% of Premier League matches and 9% of La Liga matches started before 6 a.m. Pacific time. New York had none in any of the eight competitions, and São Paulo's only ones were 1% of NBA games.
